Colour scheme for façade renovation and beautification

Presentation :

The Meltingshopping concept was also accompanied by a strong desire to beautify the district. In the wake of the banners project, Atrium wanted to launch a façade renovation campaign in the areas where it is located. The purpose of this project was to address the negative points raised in the Cooparch report, which mentioned in particular the state of the façades in the shopping areas in Madou district.

This campaign kicked off with the creation of a colour scheme which, inspired by a specialist bureau (architect, art historian), will result in improving and modifying the municipal city planning regulation relating to the use of colour on façades including ironwork and woodwork.

Objectives :

  • To take advantage of the new layout of Place Saint-Josse to improve and harmonise the colours used on façades with an eye to the character and function of each building.

  • To create a tool which will encourage shop owners to renovate and add value to their façade(s).

District concerned :

The Madou district and the district’s shopping areas (Chaussée de Louvain from Place Madou to Rue Willems, Rue Verbist and Place Saint-Josse).

Project dates :

Research was completed in March 2008. The amendment to the RCU [Regulation] should be through by the end of 2008. A specification and a call for tenders will be ready in the months following the approval of this call for proposals.

Target group(s) :

  • Public- and private-sector decision-makers,
  • Residents – Traders – Regular customers,
  • New customers as a new brand image is built.

Expected impact :

  • A fresh city image as an extension of the future prospects outline.
  • Encouragement to renovate and beautify façades.
  • A pleasant "pilgrimage" to the heart of Saint-Josse.

Partnerships motivated :

  • The Municipality of Saint-Josse: the College of Burgomasters and Assistant Burgomasters and the city planning section,
  • The traders' associations in the Madou district,
  • Bral, Centre Urbain and the municipal services concerned (city planning, public works, etc.).

Advertising and distribution :

  • A clear and explanatory brochure will be drawn up and supplied to owners and tenants.
  • A notice will be published in the local newspapers and a press conference held.
