Urban Ashtrays
Presentation :
In the wake of the ban on smoking in HORECA businesses and offices, our footpaths seem to be strewn with cigarette butts. Since public hygiene affects everyone, the Saint-Josse Atrium has decided to respond to this particular issue by means of urban ashtrays. Part of this project has been funded by a regional call for proposals.
Objectives :
- To maintain levels of cleanliness in front of the HORECA businesses and to help the traders to cope with the new legislation by offering them an urban ashtray.
- To encourage the trader to take responsibility by having him clean and empty the ashtray.
District in question : Madou.
Project dates :
- August 2007: call for tenders from various suppliers.
- September 2007: drawing up of the agreement and signing by traders.
- October 2007: The STIC (Joint Interest Works Service) set up the "Urban Ashtrays".
Target groups :
- Regular customers in the Saint-Josse shopping areas,
- HORECA sector customers,
- Saint Josse residents,
- Restaurateurs.
Expectations : The aim was to install a minimum of 20 ashtrays.
Results : 24 ashtrays were installed.
Partnerships mobilised :
- 24 HORECA sector traders,
- The municipality of Saint-Josse, represented by Mr. Eric Jassin, Deputy Burgomaster responsible for Trade,
- STIC, who installed the ashtrays,
- The Brussels-Capital Region,
- The Saint-Josse traders' associations.
Budget :
The total budget for this project was €3,000, €2,500 of which was sourced from the regional call for proposals.
Follow-up and management :
An assessment of the condition of these ashtrays and adherence to the agreement signed by the traders was undertaken by the Saint-Josse Atrium Stewards team.
